Practice guide
- Practice daily at sunrise and sunset when baraka ("blessings" in Arabic) is more pronounced.
- Avoid consuming toxic substances 3 hours before or after. If you have any illness or health fragility, it is best to wait until it improves to practice daily.
- Adopt a very comfortable posture with a straight back. Keep arms relaxed and shoulders down. Sit on a chair or in a half-lotus or full lotus position.
- Use a metronome set to 60 beats (cycles) per minute, and at 1/4 with no variation in the tone of the starting beat.
- Starting with the first element– earth –inhale slowly during 6 beats; and exhale fully during 8 beats. Prefer soft and smooth over forced breathing.
- Focus attention at the tip of the nose. Feel the fresh air. Imagine the air is imbued with the color of the element. Concentrate on the sensation of the air as it enters your body. Relax and let go of any tension or effort.
- Contemplate one of the characteristics of the element. For example, for earth, contemplate creation, family, abundance, strength, resilience, solidity.
- Perform 10 breath cycles for each of the 5 elements, in the order listed in the table above.
